Migrating from Microsoft Exchange to IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8 Tuesday, Nov 18 2008

The Domino server offers two methods of migration from Microsoft Exchange to IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8 as follows:

  1. Server-to-server migration with the help of Domino upgrade service - Domino Upgrade Services in the Domino Administrator client allows migration information from existing Microsoft Exchange messaging and directory system to Lotus Domino R8. With Domino Upgrade Services, you can import users from the foreign directory, register them as Notes users, and then convert the mail from Microsoft Exchange mail system to a Domino mail database. The migration tool lets you migrate all users and/or selective users from the foreign directory.
  2. Client-to-client migration with the help of Notes upgrade service (Nupgrade) -Notes Upgrade Services works only with a local Microsoft Outlook Personal Storage (PST) file, creating a local NSF file. There is no need to access the servers and thus no update to the server’s primary Domino directory. Although Notes Upgrade Service is designed to migrate Microsoft Exchange data that resides locally in an Outlook PST file, it never accesses the Microsoft Exchange server.

When another person has access to your Lotus Notes mail file, they can perform tasks for you, such as reading your mail and responding on your behalf.You decide how much access you want them to have. You allow access to your mail file by setting a Mail preference.

  1. Click More
  2. Click Preferences
  3. Click the Access & Delegation tab
  4. In Access to Your Mail & Calendar tab under Access & Delegation click Add,
  5. In the new window (Add People/Groups window), click the arrow next to “Just this person or group” to select from a directory
  6. Select a person or group from the window opened and then Click Ok,
  7. Select the components to which you want to allow access (like Mail, Calender, To Do and Contacts / Calendar, To Do and Contacts / None,
  8. Select the arrow in the Access frame to choose how much access you want your delegate to have.
  9. Click Ok,
  10. Click Ok to save your Access & Delegation preference

After following the above steps, you can successfully give someone else access to your e-mail!

Improved efficiency and performance
Several enhancements to Lotus Notes and Domino 8 software provide an opportunity for
enhanced system performance. These include streaming replication for Lotus Domino
clusters and a variety of database and I/O improvements.

Versatility
Lotus Domino 8 server software runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. Lotus Notes 8 client support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 WS is currently planned for general availability of Lotus Notes 8. The Lotus Notes 8 client offers a consistent installation process for both Microsoft Windows operating system users and Linux desktop users. Enhancements in Lotus Notes 8 for Linux include integrated instant messaging and presence awareness, the Lotus Notes smarticons toolbar, and support for color printing.

The newest mode of the IBM Lotus iNotes mail client — the Ultralite mode — available in Lotus Domino Web Access version 8.0.2. Using the Ultralite mode, Lotus iNotes users can view their Inbox, Contacts, or Day-at-a-glance Calendar. It is designed for use on a mobile device and is initially supported on the Apple iPhone or iPod touch. As a result, users can quickly access Lotus Notes related info (e-mail, calendars, etc.) directly through the Apple iPhone Safari browser.

 

Lotus Domino Web Application Development Wiki Tuesday, Apr 8 2008

The Lotus Technical Information and Education Team have partnered with the IBM Redbooks team to create the  Lotus Domino Web Application Development Wiki - a new collaborative tool for developers. The Redbooks team held a residency to pre-populate the wiki with useful information and have now set it free to grow further on its own.
