Three Steps of Creating composite applications for Lotus Notes 8 with WebSphere Portal Factory Sunday, Nov 9 2008

Most developers are familiar with composite application development for Lotus Notes 8 with IBM Lotus Domino Designer, IBM Lotus Component Designer or IBM Rational Application Development. But also, it is possible to create composite applications with IBM WebSphere Portlet Factory.

  1. Create portlets using WebSphere Portlet Factory
  2. Create a Web application bundle package using WebSphere Portlet Factory and deploy it in Lotus Notes 8.
  3. Create a composite application in Lotus Notes 8 using these two portlets.

The article at link provides details of the above steps.

A simple video chat application development with Lotus Sametime Telephony client toolkit Monday, Nov 3 2008

The Lotus Sametime 8.0 telephony service includes voice and video chat functions and the click-to-call function. Along with these new features of voice and video chat and the click-to-call functions. By utilizing the extensible platform based on the Eclipse plug-in framework which Lotus Sametime 8.0 provides, it is possible to expand real-time communication with telephony and audio-visual capabilities. Lotus Sametime Telephony client toolkit can be used to develop new plug-in applications on top of Lotus Sametime Connect.

As an example,  a simple video chat application development which provides the following features is described in the article that could be found here.

  • An application that displays as a rectangle area in Lotus Sametime Connect client UI
  • Video chat caller, which can specify a recipient and start a video chat on the application UI
  • Video chat recipient, which can automatically accept the incoming video chat request
  • Embedding of both the local screen and the remote screen in the application UI

The Lotus Notes V8 Client and Eclipse Tuesday, Oct 7 2008

Many of the new features in Lotus Notes V8 are the result of the move to the Eclipse/Lotus Expeditor environment. Lotus Notes V8 client encapsulates all the code that is Lotus Notes within the Eclipse environment. So, Lotus Notes V8 can be extended in the same way that Eclipse itself can be extended.

The flexibility of the Eclipse user interface has contributed to the Notes user interface. For example, the sidebar can display “always on” applications like the Activity Manager, a day-at-a-glance calendar, instant messaging, and the new RSS feed reader. Besides this, developers can build their own custom Eclipse plug-ins for the sidebar. For further information about Lotus Notes v8 client, refer to article at IBM Developerworks site from http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus/library/notes8-new/.
